BIG SUR EXPERIENCES
LOT 24 ~ A SPECIAL HIKE IN BIG SUR WITH AUBERT DE VILLAINE FOR SIX
When was the last time you got to hike with perhaps the most influential winemaker in the world? Last year, our dear friend Aubert de Villaine agreed to participate in a hike somewhere in Big Sur, and the day was truly magical. Aubert is co-owner and president of the world-famous Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and he has a house here in Big Sur, and visits a couple of times a year. Despite his lofty achievements and place in the wine world, you could not wish to meet a nicer man – he is ineffably engaging and has a wicked sense of humor. This lot includes wines and snacks to be enjoyed on a private hike, dinner at later that day at the exquisite Deetjens Big Sur Inn with some special wines from the festival’s cellar. This is strictly limited to Aubert’s calendar, most likely in the Spring of 2014.
LOT 18 ~ MAGIC IN BIG SUR – DINNER FOR SIX AT A UNIQUE HOME ON THE COAST WITH A NIGHT AT L’AUBERGE CARMEL
Working magic is something that happens when friends put their heads together, and we promise a truly magical night on the coast of Big Sur. Our neighbors, Joe and Nancy Schoendorf, have graciously offered to open their lovely home that has a beautiful view of the ocean adjacent to the waterfall at Julia Pfeiffer Burns for a dinner for six lucky guests. Our dear friend and constant supporter of the Festival, David Fink, owner of the Mirabel Group, is arranging for his brilliantly talented chef at Aubergine Restaurant, Justin Cogley, to create an epic dinner for six guests for this evening. Justin has been named the Best New Chef for 2013 by Food and Wine Magazine, and you’ll see why. You will be staying at the world-class L’Auberge Carmel, shuttled to the private cellar of Joe Schoendorf in a luxurious S Class Mercedes Benz and enjoy a sumptuous Aubergine’s Signature Breakfast in the morning. Wines for the evening, and matched wines, will come from both Joe and David’s cellars. This promises to be an evening of wonderful indulgence on every level – your lodging, the drive down and back, the amazing food and wines and the great company! Your visit must be sometime Sunday through Thursday (Oct.-May 2014), excluding holidays and special events, at an agreeable time with Chef Cogley and the Schoendorf’s.
LOT 16 ~ ON THE EDGE OF THE WORLD – BIG SUR OCEAN, CHEF MATT BOLTON AND RAM’S GATE WINERY!
For those of you who might be car buffs, the names Peter and Merle Mullin would surely bring a smile to your face. And if you were at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance a couple of years ago, you would have seen them take Best of Class, and then ultimately, Best of Show with their exquisite French 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne. And this year, they showed a truly magnificent, restored 1930 G.A.R. Type B5 Roadster, as well as an impeccable 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich. The Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard is a truly remarkable homage to mostly Art Deco-era vehicles and art. The collection of Bugattis is something to behold! Peter and Merle also have one of the most amazing homes in Big Sur – imagine having to cross a moat in order to get to the expansive teak deck and home, and you have a rough idea of what you’re getting yourselves into! Step on the stones just inches above the water and soon you’ll be in a world unlike any other.
Peter and Merle have generously offered their home for dinner for six including their fine selves, and we will have our good friend, Chef Matt Bolton of Pacific’s Edge at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands cook your dinner as the wines from Ram’s Gate Winery are poured to match every course. What makes Ram’s Gate so unique is that they only sell their wines to their membership list and at the winery. You won’t find it at any stores or restaurants, and they have very limited quantities. This will be a dinner coordinated with Peter and Merle’s schedule, but they are in Big Sur often, if they’re not in Italy making wine or olive oil at their villa, or off at some Concours! It will be so very worth it, as they are truly the most unpretentious people one might imagine! A good time will be definitely had by all.
LOT 2 ~ DINNER FOR SIX AT THE GEORIS BIG SUR HOME
Once again, our good friends and neighbors Sheila and Gaston have graciously donated this highly popular lot of a magical evening in Big Sur. They live high on a hill overlooking the south coast of Big Sur, in a truly unique house designed by our own Big Sur legendary Mickey Muennig. They will welcome you and five of your friends with a sumptuous dinner prepared by Chef Brandon Miller, paired with wines from the Madeleine Winery of Carmel Valley. Chef Brandon is a partner in the highly popular Mundaka Spanish tapas restaurant located in downtown Carmel. And Madeleine’s wines, made by Damien Georis, have garnered extremely favorable reviews. Prior to dinner, you’ll have gone on a guided hike somewhere in the depths of the Big Sur natural beauty, personally crafted to your needs and hiking abilities by our chums at Big Sur Guides. Explore the true inside of Big Sur! Date and time agreed upon through mutual negotiations.

This will be more than a heap of Big Sur fun!
LOT 27 ~ DINNER FOR SIX AT PAM AND HOWIE’S BIG SUR HOME WITH JUSTIN BALDWIN AND CHEF JERRY
Above and behind the Ventana Inn, is a spectacular home all crafted with green design. This is the new home, recently finished, of our dear friends and supporters, Pam and Howie Conant. They lost their original home in the massive Basin Complex Fire of 2008. We’re so honored to be offered this incredible space for a pretty incredible dinner! This amazing dinner will include Pam and Howie and our dear friend, Justin Baldwin, who will be serving wines from his collection to match a sumptuous dinner prepared by Chef Jerry Regester of the Restaurant C at the Cannery Row Clement Intercontinental. We couldn’t imagine a more fun and sparkling dinner, and several members of the Festival committee are fighting over who’ll get to be sommelier!
LOT 10 ~ PRIVATE HIKING WITH STEMWARE IN SPRINGTIME 2014 FOR SIX
Enjoy Big Sur from a new perspective, as we invite six of you to Partington Ridge, also known as the Ridge of Artists, located just six miles south of Post Ranch Inn. Join Toby and a couple of the Festival crew for lunch and matching wines. You’ll also walk away with four Festival Riedel logo glasses each. Imagine driving up a private dirt road through forests of oak, redwood, and emerging into the brilliant open vistas of ocean, some 1200’ almost directly above the ocean. A good brisk walk part way up what is affectionately termed Heart Attack Hill and we’ll see some pretty amazing sights all the way along – as the elevation increases, so does the magical vegetation and at each turn of the path, there are incomparable views and aromas. Back at the house, a gorgeous lunch prepared by Toby and Aengus, awaits you, along with wines from the Festival cellars. It’s hard to explain the uniqueness of this special lot, but know you’d be in for something remarkable and breath-takingly beautiful.
LOT 21 ~ THE BIG SUR WOOD CABIN ~ DINNER FOR SIX, WITH CHEF MATT GLAZER, PISONI WINES, AND A VIEW TO BEAT THE BAND!
Ed Norris is truly one of the most unassuming gentlemen you could wish to meet, and he has lived here in a gorgeous, and like him, unassuming but exceptionally elegant (mostly) redwood home located near Ventana and the Post Ranch Inn. Our friend and sustaining supporter, Gary Pisoni, is donating some special wines from his cellar for you to savor this evening. Enjoy appetizers on the deck and look all the way south down the Big Sur coast. The views seem to go on forever. Dinner will be prepared by New Orleans native Chef Matt Glazer of the Big Sur Roadhouse, who blends classical techniques with a commitment to sustainability and eye to local foragers, fishermen and sausage celebrities. Chef Glazer’s “Coastal Cajun” salutes the best of California’s cornucopia with a spin. Wines will be poured by one of our own Festival committee sommeliers. Timing of this event will be by mutual calendar arrangements – Ed leads extensive European cycling tours and is ergo not always at this beautiful home!
LOT 6 ~ TWO NIGHT STAY AT VENTANA INN WITH DINNER AND MASSAGE FOR TWO
Ventana Inn is an iconic resort that has been through several iterations in its storied career as one of the loveliest resorts anywhere on the West Coast. Set on the side of the Big Sur mountains and featuring expansive rooms, two lovely swimming pools, a stunning restaurant and so much more, Ventana is more than a hotel – it’s a true experience! We’re so delighted to offer this particular lot of two nights for two of you, that includes a dinner at the Cielo Restaurant where chef Truman Jones conjures up locally sourced and fresh seasonal dishes. A spa treatment including a massage, awaits you at your convenience and you can roam the hills behind the resort, or simply kick back and relax!

His Calera wines from primarily San Benito are known throughout the world for their grace and suppleness, intelligent structure and for his work, Josh has been recognized many times over. LOT 22 ~CENTRAL COAST WINE CLASSIC PACKAGE WITH DINNER AT HEARST CASTLE FOR TWO
Our Advisory Board member, friend and partner, Archie McLaren is the co-founder and current president of the Central Coast Wine Classic, that celebrates their 30th year in 2014. LOT 15 ~ SIDEWAYS REDUX…ALMOST, KIND OF…
Since the beginning of the Festival, and because of a two-decades-long friendship and connection, Frank Ostini has beautifully supported the festival, and we are so very grateful for his generosity. This year, we have been blessed with Sideways-inspired day in Buellton, located in the heart of one of the finest wine-growing regions in all of California – Santa Ynez. Join Frank for lunch at the beautiful Avant – a tapas and wine bar, then he’ll take you on a tour of his winery and on to Terravant for barrel samples of the wines that he and his brilliant partner, Gray Hartley, have created. That evening, you’ll have a sumptuous dinner at the Hitching Post II where quite a bit of the Sideways action took place. Frank will throw in a bottle of his wine, but during dinner, the Festival will arrange for a bottle of each of the following wines that were featured in the film, to include: Sanford Winery, Whitcraft Winery, Kistler Vineyards, Andrew Murray Vineyards, Foxen Vinyards, Fiddlehead Cellars, Hitching Post Wines, Lucas and Lewellen Wines. And as a bonus, if you book early enough, one of the original characters in the film, Chris Burroughs (he of the cowboy hat!) will join you! Chris is a most engaging individual, and knows as much as anyone in the entire Central Coast about the local wineries and who’s involved. As he says: Warhol promised us 15 minutes of fame – I think mine lasted about 44.1 seconds! Sounds like a pretty epic dinner to us! Date based on mutual availability.
LOT 23 ~ THE GREAT HILL! TWO DAYS AND TWO NIGHTS FOR TWO COUPLES
The area of Pritchard Hill, located on the east side of the Napa Valley, is perhaps the most coveted mountain in all of the region, and rightly so – the soils are incredible and the wines are stunning, across the board. Chappellet, Continuum Estate, Brand Vineyards, Gandona, Ovid Vineyards, Montagna Estate and David Arthur have all promised to manifest special personalized tastings for two couples over two days. There’s a good chance you’ll meet every single wine-maker and/or property owner. Each couple will receive a signed bottle of wine from the seven vintners as an added bonus! As past supporters and good friends of the Festival both Chappellet and Continuum will make this trip extra special! Also included are two nights at the stunning boutique hotel Andaz Napa. And it’s located in downtown Napa – the perfect place to stroll into the heart of the action after your days of tasting on the mountain!
LOT 8 ~ DINNER FOR SIX AT JUSTIN BALDWIN’S CARMEL POINT HOME
Since Day One of the Festival, Justin Baldwin has brilliantly created some of the most epic auction lots for us, and sincerely, there are not enough accolades for this man and what he has manifested for the benefit of this community that he loves so much. For this particular lot Justin is opening his glorious and intimate Normandy Farm style Carmel Point home; one of the first homes in Carmel, designed and built by quintessential Carmel architect Hugh Comstock in 1931. You’ll start out with a vintage champagne reception in the English garden, and move on to a curator discussion and display of various early nineteenth century art pieces by top Early California and local artists. Sommelier of the hour will be none other than Toby Rowland-Jones! Then sit down in the intimate dining room and enjoy a truly superb dinner created by our good friend and gifted chef Cy Yontz of the Rio Grill here in Carmel. The Rio Grill is an incredibly popular establishment and is celebrating thirty years of presenting always fresh, locally sourced food with a phenomenal atmosphere. After, head over to the Hyatt Carmel Highlands for a delightful digestif where you’ll overlook the Pacific and enjoy a night’s stay. LOT 28 ~ HERE COMES THE JUDGE! A STUNNING SIX MAGNUM COLLECTION OF KONGSGAARD WINE AND MORE
Not just an icon, John Kongsgaard is widely recognized as one of the most influential winemakers in Napa and one of the most benevolent individuals one could imagine. Despite the fact that he cannot be here for this weekend’s festivities, and because he loves this area so much and the festival in particular, he has made an exceptionally generous donation for our auction. John founded his winery with his wife Maggy in the 1970’s on the family property. Their inaugural wine was released onto the market in 1996 and now fetches premium prices – not because it’s simply “Napa” but because the quality is, and always has been, of the very highest quality. Here is what our dear friend has donated for the auction: A personal tour and tasting at Atlas Peak, made even rarer as the vineyards and winery are not open to the public, lunch in the Kongsgaard cave and 2 magnums each of Kongsgaard 2010 Judge Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. In talking to John recently, the value of these wines alone are worth well over $2,000. Must be arranged at least four weeks in advance and at a mutually agreeable time.
LOT 19 ~ AN EVENING AND STAY AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, SAN FRANCISCO FOR TWO
Chef Michael Rotondo joins us this weekend for the Festival, and we could not be more delighted to have his stellar abilities here! Hardly your average chef – Michael was Chef de Cuisine and then Executive Chef at the famed Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago for eight years. For this auction lot, you’ll enjoy chef’s Eight-Course Tasting Menu with beverage pairings for two at Parallel 37 and a one-night stay in Superior Room atop Nob Hill. It’s this kind of support and generosity that keep this Festival alive and able to continue the work we do to support our local nonprofit organizations. For this particular lot, Chef Brian will welcome you and three guests for a private, behind-the-scenes VIP tour of their truly stunning Napa winery estate, followed by a four-course luncheon paired with small production wines from their portfolio. You’ll learn more than you could have possibly imagined!
LOT 12 ~ BERNARDUS 6 LITER 2005 MARINUS
This remarkable 6 liter Bottle is personally signed by Ben Pon, the owner of Bernardus, and we have been told that Mr. Pon very rarely signs bottles! This is only one of twelve that were made in this size, so we are doubly honored. The 2005 vintage enjoyed beautifully sunny but relatively cool weather, ending with moderately warm days through the critical months of September and October. These wines have exceptionally vivid fruit characters. At Bernardus they follow traditional Bordeaux vinification methods. All grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in small fermenters. Each one is pumped over by hand twice a day throughout its fourteen-day maceration. They are then pressed individually after a tasting evaluation for tannin extraction and lodged in small Bordeaux cooperage for ageing. The wines are kept in their individual lots until a few months before bottling, when the final blend is made. And for this particular vintage the blend is as follows: Cabernet Sauvignon - 74.4%, Merlot - 15.3%, Malbec - 5.0%, Petit Verdot - 4.8%, Cabernet Franc - 0.5%. Many thanks to Rob Baker of Bernardus for facilitating this lovely large bottle, and we hope you’ll visit their exquisite tasting room in Carmel Valley Village, followed by dinner at the Marinus restaurant!
LOT 30 ~ COLLECTION OF SIGNED MAGNUMS FROM THE NORTH
